Nanamebori Karakusa Japanese Porcelain Mug

Attention to detail. That’s what sets the Karakusa Nanamebori dinnerware collection apart. It’s been hand painted by skilled artisans in Japan, and slightly twisted to give an organic and asymmetric finish.

In Japanese the kara of Karakusa means “China”, while kusa means “plant”, meaning “Chinese plants”. The pattern is first found in Egypt, and seems to have been molded on shapes from nature like seaweed, ferns or vines. The pattern reached Asia via the Silk Route, fused with the Buddhist culture of China and reached Japan in the Asuka period (7th Century AD).
